'Easterner' responds to Bushwhacker debate

Dear editor:

I am responding to Ms. Harwell's letter to the editor in the June 21 edition of the Nevada Daily Mail.

I was traveling through the town of Nevada when I read her letter. As an easterner unfamiliar with the history of Nevada, I was appalled at the rancor that seems to be present in a "discussion" about Bushwhacker name possibilities. This so called discussion has intonations of a wild west mentality where might equals right. I expected additional rancor as I read Ms. Harwell's letter but was pleasantly surprised and quite impressed by her eloquent writing as she addressed the substance of the Bushwhacker name discussion as opposed to her detractors who thought it of critical importance to correct her grammar. Little heed was paid to her courage to pursue a college career piecemeal over the last 6 years. It is obvious from the caliber of her writing that she has put her education to good use and is quite a gifted writer. It is also obvious that she has the character to rise above petty meanness and stick to the issue at hand. I hope that she continues her rebuttal with the professionalism and character with which she has begun.
