The Nevada Griffons pounded out 20 hits and scored 17 runs as they trounced the Newton Rebels in Newton, Kan., Thursday.

The game was called after seven innings of play as the Griffons built a 17-2 lead behind a steady offensive attack and a good pitching performance by Brandon Wellborn.

All nine Griffon starters had at least one hit and scored at least one run and Wellborn (1-2) threw seven innings of five-hit ball to get the victory.

Only Tim Santiago didn't have at least two hits among Nevada batters, but he did hit his team-leading seventh home run of the season. Santiago also had a team-high three RBIs in the game.

Matt Lawson went 3-for-6 at the plate, while Hunter Johnson went 3-for-5 and Kyle Moore went 3-for-4.

The 17 runs scored by the Griffons (21-16) were the third most all season and the highest total since they scored 20 against the Springfield Generals on June 28.

Lawson and Michael Flower each scored three times for the Griffons.

Wellborn allowed two earned runs, two walks and struck out five to earn his first win of the season.

The Griffons also took care of business on the field with no errors.

The Griffons continue their road trip today as they get back into Jayhawk League action to take on the El Dorado Broncos. The Griffons will also be in El Dorado to face the Broncos tomorrow and Sunday as the two teams play a four game series.

The Broncos lead the season series with the Griffons 2-1.
