Vernon County Commissioners met with representatives of the Missouri Department of Transportation on Tuesday, regarding MoDOT's bridge inspection schedule.

Presiding Commissioner David Darnold said that bridge inspections are required every two years.

Commissioners noted that the bridge inspections, to begin in March, are a big job in Vernon County.

"We really have a lot of bridges -- more than you'd think," said Southern Commissioner Bonnie McCord.

Vernon County has 259 bridges -- many more than most of the nearby counties slated for inspection this year.

For example, St. Clair County has 76 bridges; Dade County, 166, and Barry County has 92. Several bridges in Vernon County cross the Marmaton River and other small waterways.
