BUILDING for Sale …NOT Business for Sale

Sunday, February 5, 2006

In the near future area residents will see "Building for Sale" signs on the Fort Scott Tribune, Fort Scott Countryside and the Sunday Herald-Tribune (Fort Scott office only) building located on the corner of Wall and National streets in Fort Scott.

Let me be the first to say that it is ONLY the building that is for sale. The Tribune, Countryside and the Fort Scott office of the Sunday Herald-Tribune will be relocating next door where Othick Abstract resided for many years. We are thrilled to be able to stay in downtown Fort Scott! The reasons for our move are space and efficiency -- we have too much of the first and not enough of the second. Incredible advances in technology have reduced the size and amount of equipment and space needed to produce a newspaper. We no longer require huge darkrooms, room-size cameras, 600 square feet of design tables where the paper is built by hand, or three floors (including a basement). Today it takes multiple desktop computers that are operated by skilled craftsmen and dedicated reporters.

As the newspaper industry continues to evolve, so too must we. Moving into a smaller building will allow us to become more efficient and purchase more of the new equipment that is needed to produce a newspaper in this century.

Our building at Wall and National has been the home of The Tribune for decades. It holds great history and has been our caretaker as the newspaper industry has undergone tremendous change. We all will miss the rich history it holds, but we are eager to pursue the new levels of excellence this move will afford our readers and us.

The Nevada offices for the Nevada Daily Mail, Sunday Herald-Tribune and the Nevada News will not be relocating.
