Wicked weather alters Nevada schedules once again

Friday, April 7, 2006

Another severe weather system, more changes in the 2006 spring sports calendar for Nevada High School.

A weather system that hit southwest Missouri Thursday evening caused many events to either be postponed or canceled.

Nevada' baseball team was scheduled to participate in the consolation bracket of the Bill O'Dell Baseball Tournament in Carthage Thursday, but with forecasters predicting rain, hail and the threat of tornadoes, the game was moved to Saturday morning.

Nevada will now play the hosting Carthage Tigers tomorrow at 9 a.m. at Carl Lewton Stadium.

The tournament's other game, a consolation matchup between Lamar and Aurora, was moved to today at 4 p.m. The tournament will also play the regularly scheduled winner's bracket semifinals today, with Webb City taking on Carl Junction at 6 p.m., and Monett facing Seneca at 8 p.m.

If Nevada wins their game tomorrow morning, they will play right afterwards against the winner of the Lamar-Aurora contest for fifth place in the tournament.

The weather also caused the Tiger tennis team to postpone their tennis match in Carthage, originally scheduled for Thursday.

The tennis team got a double whammy, as they also must postpone today's scheduled home match against Fort Scott, Kan., because Fort Scott's scheduled league match from yesterday was moved to today.

The Nevada Middle School track team also was forced to abandon plans to visit Carthage for a meet yesterday.

Makeup dates for tennis and track matches have not been announced.

The forecasters were proven correct Thursday evening, as heavy rain, strong winds and possible tornadic activity was reported in Jasper County. A cell that produced a tornado warning in the county went just north of Carthage.

Nevada was inundated with heavy rain and winds for a short period of time around 8 p.m., with most of the worst parts of the system staying to the south of town.

One team that was able to play was Nevada's golf team, which battled light rain during the middle part of the day Thursday in Joplin.
