Remembering Vicki

Sunday, April 23, 2006

When we first moved to town in 1968, we bought a house on 23rd Street, and little did we realize how fortunate we were. Not only were there lots of young families, but there was togetherness and an extension of family for about two blocks.

Our oldest was a mere 7 months when we moved in and, sometime thereafter, we had an occasion to need a baby sitter.

Vicki Smith (O'Bryan) picked up that path. Later on, she shared that responsibility with sisters Connie and Kim. As parents, we appreciated the care she gave looking out for our flesh and blood.

Last week the 23rd Street group gathered once again to honor Vicki, who at 54, lost a long struggle with cancer. We met in Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church to honor the family and Vicki's life. At the service, the priest shared her devotion to the church, her kindness, and her outstanding friendships.

In addition to the 23rd Street mourners, there were her co-workers from Ward Kraft, Pioneer Kiwanis, and a host of friends. The choir paid tribute as we all gathered together to mourn the loss of this special friend.

Anytime I drive down 23rd Street, I can't help but think about how fortunate we were to find such a supportive neighborhood and the babysitter, co-worker and friend who we all will miss.

We often think we are going to live forever, but when someone like Vicki is taken from our midst, it saddens all of us and reminds us that whatever time we are given, we have to use it wisely.
