UNIONTOWN, Kan. -- Uniontown jumped out to a 39-6 lead on Erie and went on to take a 39-20 win over the Red Devils in the first game of the season Friday night.

Chad Hays ran for two touchdowns and threw a TD pass to Gage McKinnis, who also had two rushing scores for the Eagles.

Uniontown led 14-0 after one period as McKinnis, then Hays, each scored on one-yard runs. Luke Spainhoward made the extra-point kicks after each one.

It became 21-0 early in the second when McKinnis scored from seven yards out.

Erie quarterback Nick Greve got his team on the scoreboard when he hit Ethan Cornell from 11-yards out later in the quarter. The extra-point kick was blocked.

Hays and McKinnis connected on their scoring pass just before halftime from 20 yards away. The kick failed and it was 27-6.

Hays opened the third quarter scoring with a 69-yard TD run to make it 33-6. Vincent Ratliff capped Uniontown's scoring with a one-yard TD run.

Erie scored twice late in the game as its No. 1 offense stayed out after Uniontown began to put in junior varsity players. Garett Nally scored on a one-yard run in the third and Greve ran in the two-point conversion. Greve capped the scoring with an 11-yard run in the fourth.

Hays finished with 124 yards rushing on 11 carries for the Eagles and also completed three of six passes for 50 yards. McKinnis had nine carries for 54 yards and two receptions for 40 yards.

Spainhoward had an interception and a fumble recovery. Cody Tinsley led the Eagle defense with eight tackles.

Uniontown rushed for 231 of its 281 total yards. Erie had 218 yards passing but the majority of that was on the JV defense. The Red Devils were held to minus-35 yards rushing on 36 carries, leaving them with a total offensive output of just 173 yards.

The Eagles travel to Riverton next Friday.
