Give a verdict

The Cedar County slander case of Joseph Grimes vs. Ben Thorp came to an end last night when a jury gave the plaintiff a judgment of $480, says the Daily Democrat of Sept. 27.

Thorp is a wealthy land owner of Caplinger Mills; owning 880 acres. Grimes rented a small patch of 28 acres and raised corn. Thorp was very much dissatisfied with his share of the crop and it was alleged that he declared publicly "Joe grimes stole my corn." Thorp in former trials denied putting it that strong by saying his language was "Joe Grimes sold my cold." This time he virtually admitted making the charges.

Favor of Costello

NEW YORK -- Federal Judge Edmond L. Palmieri today dismissed a government proceeding to take away gambler Frank Costello's citizenship.

Palmieri threw out the case "without prejudice" -- meaning that the government may renew the proceedings.

U.S. Atty. Paul W. Williams announced an appeal would be taken.

Palmieri ruled that the government's case rested on documents containing references to wire taps, and that use of such evidence is not admissible in federal proceedings.
