Jesse Ray Cartwright, 83, Nevada, Mo., passed away on Monday, Oct. 30, 2006, at Moore-Few Care Center in Nevada following a lengthy illness. He was born Oct. 2, 1923, in Vernon County, Mo., to William Webster Cartwright and Laura Louise Turner Cartwright. He married Dorothy Agnes Kathryn Thorburn on Nov. 27, 1944, in Fort Scott, Kan. She preceded him in death on Nov. 7, 2001.

Jesse was born and reared in Vernon County and spent his youth here. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II receiving the Combat Infantry Badge, the Good Conduct Medal, a Bronze Battle Star, an Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Ribbon, Victory Medal, and was a master marksman. Following the service, he made his living as a farmer, truck driver, and also worked at Nevada State Hospital for 15 years. Jesse was a member of the Community of Christ Church in Nevada, the VFW Post No. 2175, and the BPOE No. 564. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman.

Survivors include, one son, Kenneth Cartwright, MoundvilIe, Mo.; four grandchildren, Tim Cartwright, Nevada, Webb Cartwright, Compton Junction, Mo., Beck Grandstaff, Olathe, Kan., and Jeannie Cartwright, Nevada; and one sister, Nettie Culbertson, Fort Scott. In addition to his wife, he was preceded by one son, Johnny Cartwright.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., on Friday, Nov. 3, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada. Interment will follow in Moore Cemetery, Nevada. Friends may call now and until the hour of service and the family receives friends 7-8 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 2, at the funeral home.
