100 years ago

Sells two smelters

William Lanyon, who owns the Lanyon smelters in the this city, has sold a controlling interest in his smelters at Caney and Deering t to the American Lead Zinc and Smelting company of Boston. This is the company which owns about 300 acres of the best of nine fields in and about Joplin. A story in yesterday's Star stated that he had also sold his Pittsburg interests to this company Mr. Lanyon denies the report today stating that the disposed of his Montgomery interests only. He states that he will retain his other interests. In answer to the question why he sold his smelters Mr. Lanyon said he never turned down a good proposition.

Seniors hold Christmas party at Bryan School

Approximately 70 Nevada High School seniors attended the class Christmas party, which was held Tuesday night at the Bryan School cafeteria.

During the evening the group enjoyed a Christmas toy gift exchange distributed from the Christmas tree by Santa Claus, Gary Ewan. Christmas carols were sung with Mrs. Gene Rimmer serving as pianist, and the group spent the remainder of the evening dancing to records.

Refreshments of pop, potato chips, sandwiches and cookies were served, with Melba Thomas serving as refreshment chairman.
