Cancellations: Weekend events fall victim to storm once again
Nevada Daily Mail
As a thick slate of ice persists on the streets and the ever-changing forecast now warns of a possible 3-6 inches of snow on Saturday, events continue to be canceled.
A host of meetings and other events were canceled throughout the week, and students got an unexpected vacation from school. Several sports events were canceled, then rescheduled, canceled and rescheduled again. On Thursday, high school coaches were crossing their fingers in the hope that events planned for Saturday would still take place.
The same has happened with the Vernon County Arts Council fund-raising chicken dinner. The dinner, canceled last Sunday and rescheduled has once again been canceled. This time the event will be postponed until Feb. 25. Anyone with tickets to the January event should keep them for use at the February event.
A chili feed planned by the Ladies Auxiliary VFW has also been postponed until further notice.
The annual Girl Scout cookie crunch-off that had been scheduled for Saturday has also been postponed until further notice. Organizers said arrangements for a new date must be made with the school district, since the event is to be held at Nevada Middle School, so a new date probably will not be determined until Monday.
Also, the Nevada/Vernon County recycling trailer will not be available for Bronaugh or Sheldon on Saturday, Jan. 20, due to the weather.
"The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.," a Community Council on the Performing Arts production originally planned for last weekend was canceled, but as of this morning, plans were in place to present the play at 7 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 20, and 2 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 21, at the Fox Playhouse, 110 S. Main, Nevada. For information, call (417) 549-6500.
According to the National Weather Service, the track and intensity of the storm expected to enter the area this evening is still uncertain, but forecasters are becoming more confident that the snow will occur, but whether Nevada will see significant accumulation of snow was still unclear this morning. Light freezing drizzle is also possible Sunday through Tuesday.
