100 years ago

Managers will meet trainmen on Tuesday

CHICAGO, Ill. -- Railroad managers and representatives of the organizations of trainmen and conductors will meet in the conference in this city next Tuesday in an effort to avert a threatened strike on all the railroads throughout the west.

The canvass of the vote taken by the men on all the roads involved in the controversy will have been completed by that time, and the proposition will be put up to the managers to make further concessions face a strike.

50 years ago

Three break-ins during the night

Three break-ins were reported to police this morning in three different businesses located in the 1300 block of North Front Street with a total of $102 in property missing from the firm a preliminary check of establishments revealed.

The thieves entered Smitty's Service Station through a grease room overhead door after breaking out a window and took numerous hand tools valued at $50 and two car batteries valued at $10 each.

Also hit last night was Paul's Garage and missing was a $1 bill and $1 worth of postage stamps. The thieves entered by breaking out a glass panel on a side door.

The Garton Equipment Company was also looted with $20 in bills and $10 in change missing.
