100 years ago

Rear end collision on white river line

A fearful wreck occurred near Melvia, 86 miles south of Carthage on the White River line yesterday afternoon in which three men are reported killed.

Local freight train 294 ran into Red Ball freight train 254, Engineer Rhoades, Fireman Marsden and Brakeman Groves, all of the local, were reported killed. The Nevada wrecking crew was called to the scene of the wreck and left at five o'clock yesterday afternoon in charge of Conductor Fly.

Water piped to Lyons Stadium

Two Nevada firms donated their time and equipment yesterday to dig a trench 245-feet long and lay a one inch copper pipe for water at Lyons Stadium. The line runs from Highland Street to the corner of the refreshment stand where a water fountain will be installed on Saturday. Vernon Burris furnished the digging equipment and operator and Fred Taylor did the plumbing work. The city furnished the copper piping, fittings and drinking fountain.
