Fort Scott, Kan. -- A third co-defendant charged with sexually assaulting a Fort Scott teenager in January was sentenced Thursday to 48 hours in jail and placed on 24 months probation.

Bourbon County District Judge Mark Ward sentenced 18-year-old Jared R. Cosens to two days of jail time at the Southeast Kansas Regional Correctional Center. He must report to the jail Oct. 19.

Ward also ordered Cosens to serve 40 hours of community service, write an apology letter to the victim, and possibly lecture to students about the dangers of engaging in sex and alcohol with minors. Since alcohol played a role in the incident, he also must obtain a substance abuse evaluation and follow any recommendations from that assessment.

Cosens entered into a plea deal in which he pleaded guilty to a lesser felony, lewd and lascivious behavior.

He was originally charged with aggravated criminal sodomy.

Cosens was 17 years old at the time of the incident on Jan. 27, in Fort Scott. He has since turned 18.

Four other teens were charged with assaulting the 15 year old. Two have been sentenced and two more have yet to be sentenced.
