Iona "Nonny" Stahl

Iona "Nonny" Stahl, age 95, of Lamar, passed away at 1:50 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 21, 2008, at Barton County Memorial Hospital.

Nonny was born Nov. 1, 1912, in Barton County Mo., one of the eleven children of Simon and Daisy (Hall) Washburn. After graduating from Lamar High School in 1930, she earned a teacher's certificate from Ozark Wesleyan College, in Carthage, and taught in various rural schools in Barton County. On July 4, 1940, in Kansas City, Mo., Nonny married Russell A. Stahl and they farmed in the Iantha area for many years. From 1947 until 1951 they owned and operated a bakery on the north side of the square. Russell preceded Nonny in death in December 1987.

Nonny was a member of Lamar United Methodist Church where she was active in the United Methodist Women. She was a member of the Sunny Service Club, Wednesday Reading Club, Home and Garden Club, and the Barton County Retired Teachers Association.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Jay and Marva Stahl, Lamar; two sisters, Marie Crabtree, Liberal, and Leta Archer, Long Beach, California; two sisters-in-law, Norma Washburn, Monett and Mary K. Washburn, Lamar; two granddaughters and their husbands, Jayne and Jim Novak, Nev., and Julie and Rocky Means, Lamar; a grandson, Jason and his wife Stephanie Stahl, Lamar; seven great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and three great-great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Jay, Francis, and Melvin Washburn; and five sisters, Louise Heim, Opal Greiner, Ethel Dermott, Fra Dermott, and Elva Washburn.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Feb. 25, at Daniel Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 10 a.m., until service time Monday. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Lamar Booster Club or American Diabetes Association in care of Daniel Funeral Home.
