Pancake mixes sold in area recalled

Saturday, March 8, 2008

The Quaker Oats Company, which purchased the Aunt Jemima Mills Company in 1926, has announced a recall on some of its Aunt Jemima products.

Due to potential salmonella contamination, Aunt Jemima Pancake and Waffle Mix: Original, Original Complete and Buttermilk Complete are being recalled, according to information on the Quaker Oats Company Web site, www.quakeroats.com.

According to the Web site, the products can cause health problems only if they are ingested raw or undercooked, as salmonella bacteria is killed at a temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit.

The pancake mixes, which are being recalled, were shipped to a limited number of stores.

The Web site said that the majority of the food products may not have been placed on shelves yet.

The company shipped the recalled food to Missouri and Kansas in addition to Texas, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, Illinois, Florida, Minnesota, Michigan, Colorado, Wisconsin, Ohio, New York, New Mexico and Utah.

The Quaker Oats' Web site said that the recalled products are packaged in two pound and five pound boxes. The recalled products contain one of the following 10-digit UPC numbers: 30000 43272, 30000 05040, 30000 05070, 30000 05300. These products will have "best before dates" of Feb. 8, 2009, through Feb. 16, 2009.

The Web site said that the affected product must have a combination of the "best before date" and the listed UPC number to be considered an affected product.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled Aunt Jemima Pancake and Waffle mixes should return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund or call (800) 407-2247 for a replacement coupon.

Any consumer who has questions or concerns regarding this recall should call (800) 407-2247.

The Aunt Jemima brand has been available to customers for more than 115 years, and provides nutritious and trustworthy products, according to the Web site.

"The Aunt Jemima products continue to stand for warmth, nourishment and trust -- qualities you'll find in loving moms from diverse backgrounds who care for and want the very best for their families," the Web site said.
