The April 15 tax deadline is long passed, but it's not too late to file a 2007 tax return for your economic stimulus payment. The Internal Revenue Service says retirees, disabled veterans and low-wage workers are eligible but may not know it, or think it is too late to get a payment. Statistics released June 19th indicate about 74 percent of people in this group nationwide are accounted for in the stimulus payments currently being sent, leaving about 5.2 million potential recipients remaining. In Missouri about 75 percent of those in this group are accounted for, leaving more than 113,000 potential recipients remaining who could be eligible to receive up to $600 ($1,200 for married couples filing joint returns). For people who have no tax liability or no tax filing requirement, there is a minimum payment of $300 ($600 for married couples), plus the $300 for each qualifying child To reach these groups, the IRS announced a new summer campaign to reach those retirees and disabled veterans who qualify for the economic stimulus payment but have not filed to claim it. Qualifying income includes any combination of earned income, nontaxable combat pay as well as certain payments from Social Security, Veterans Affairs and Railroad Retirement. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is not qualifying income.
