Senior Center tax issue to appear on August ballot

Wednesday, July 23, 2008

A proposed property tax of five cents to help support the Vernon County Senior Center will be on the ballots in Vernon County for the primary elections next month. Senior Center coordinator Earl Ackley asked the county commission April 30 to place the proposal before the voters and the commissioners voted 3-0 May 13 to put the proposal on the ballot for the primary elections Aug. 5. If approved by the voters, the revenue generated by a five-cent per $100 assessed valuation levy on all taxable real and personal properties would help the Senior Center staff provide programs improving the health, nutritition and quality-of-life for seniors.

Also on the ballots Aug. 5 will be democratic, republican and libertarian candidates for various local, state and federal offices.

More than 120 voters have applied for absentee ballots and July 30 is the last day the staff of county clerk Tammi Beach can mail an absentee ballot to voters.

In-person absentee balloting continues through 5 p.m. Aug. 4 at the Vernon County courthouse.
