RIVERTON, Kan. -- Uniontown's volleyball team won two of three matches against bigger schools at Riverton Thursday night, beating Class 4A Columbus and 3A Galena while falling to Class 3A Riverton.

The Eagles beat Columbus and Galena in two games and fell to Riverton in three games, each of which were decided by five points or less.

"We had a really good evening of volleyball," Uniontown head coach Jackie Hall said. "It's always good for us to compete against schools we don't normally see."

Against Columbus, the scores were 25-8, 25-14. Abbie Smith had four kills while Jacy Ermel and Devann Crystal each had three.

Riverton won the first game of the second match, 26-24. Uniontown took the second game, 25-22, before Riverton won the final game, 25-20.

"The Riverton match was a great one for us," Hall said. "In the first game, we literally gave them 10 unanswered points then came back and pushed the game to 26-24. There was a lot of great play. The team did a good job of working together and not giving up. We just had too many unforced errors in the third to finish the match off."

Smith and Ermel each had nine kills against Riverton while Crystal had six.

Uniontown then swept Galena, 25-22, 25-22. Ermel had nine kills, Crystal five and Smith three.

The Eagle varsity plays at St. Paul Thursday night with Southeast-Cherokee also in attendance for the non-league triangular.
