Joseph Edward Simon, age 90, of Nevada, died on Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, at the St. John's Regional Medical Center in Joplin following a short illness. He was born on March 9, 1918, in Vernon County, to Arthur Simon and Edna C. Haynes Simon. He was married to Eloise Virginia Stoller on October 23, 1938 in Girard, Kan., and she preceded him in death on June 4, 1979.

Joseph lived in the Milo and Nevada areas while growing up and graduated from the Sheldon High School in 1935. Joe was the valedictorian of his graduating class and was a member of the Sheldon High School basketball and baseball teams. He farmed near Milo for a number of years and in the early 1950s he began working for the Nevada State Hospital where he worked until his retirement in the early 1980s. Joe was a member of the Pine Street Baptist Church. He was an avid bowler for many years, a member of the Nevada Bass Masters, and loved the outdoors.

Survivors include two sons, Stoller Simon and his wife Betty of Westphalia, Mo., and David Simon and his wife Cathy of Milo, Mo.; one daughter, Jolene Blasiar and her husband Jim of Pryor, Okla.; eight grandchildren, Michael Simon, Fountain, Colo., Gayala Brewer, Columbus, Ohio, Jeana Herron, Beulah, Colo., Darla Calhoon, Tulsa, Okla., Jami Watson, San Antonio, Texas, Jodi Hines, Leesburg, Va., Robert Simon, Nevada, and Danelle Ropelato, Nevada; numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and his special friend, Ruth Merchant of Nevada. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Betty June and an infant sister, and one brother, Edwin Simon.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., on Wednesday, Oct. 8, at Newton Burial Park in Nevada. Friends may call from now until 10 a.m., on Wednesday at Ferry Funeral Home, 301 S. Washington, Nevada.
