Vernon County Sheriff's Office to crack down on drunken driving

Friday, December 12, 2008

As the holidays approach, local law enforcement officers will be stepping up enforcement on drunken driving.

The Vernon County Sheriff's Office will participate in the crackdown as part of a statewide effort to combat the issue of drivers under the influence of alcohol and drugs, during the next few weeks.

"It's never worth the risk to drive while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Drivers could lose their license, pay fine, or, worst of ally, cause a tragic loss of life," said Vernon County Sheriff Ron Peckman.

According to a press release from the sheriff's Office, 243 people died and there were more than 7,700 alcohol-related traffic crashes, resulting in a death or injury every 1.7 hours in 2007.

"Holiday traffic is always heavier than normal, and there are many festivities. Drivers should be extra cautious and never drive after they've been drinking," said Leanna Depue, Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety executive committee chair. "Make a plan before you go and stick with it."
