Gast finishes second in opening round at state

The Nevada Tigers golf team had two of its members in the state tournament that started Monday at Fremont Hills Country Club in Ozark, Mo.

Senior Tyler Gast went into the tournament looking to improve upon his 10th place finish in last year's tournament and got off to a strong start on day one. Gast came out of the day tied for second with Republic's Kyle Knierim at 73, just seven strokes behind overall leader Ryan Zech, of Kearney.

Gast took the tee at 9:33 a.m., Monday morning on his fourth trip to the tournament in as many years as a Nevada Tiger golfer. Though he was not far from the overall lead in the tournament, Gast's troubles are far from over, as the gap between first and second is seven strokes, but just six strokes separate Gast from 22nd spot overall.

Freshman Joseph Ferry didn't fare as well, finishing out the day tied for 117th with St. Francis Borgia's Scott Sullivan with a final score of 98. Westminster Christian School has the overall team lead at the end of day one, finishing out the opening round with a total score of 320, just one stroke ahead of Warrensburg.

Both Nevada players will be looking to put up a strong performance on day two as Ferry is set to tee off at 8:48 a.m., and Gast will follow just under two hours later at 10:45 a.m.
