Bourbon County decides against levy increase

Saturday, August 22, 2009

Bourbon County residents will see a decrease in the amount of county taxes in 2010.

The Bourbon County Commission approved the 2010 budget Monday without a mill levy increase. According to Bourbon County Clerk Joanne Long, county valuations have decreased which will lead to lower taxes than 2009.

"All three commissioners made the point of saying we're having to live with less at home and we can't ask people to pay more," Long has said. "We have to do the same too."

In order to prevent a tax increase, all county department heads were asked by the commission to evaluate the remaining 2009 budget to allow for more 2010 cash carryover. Long also said all department heads were also asked to make cuts for the 2010 budget.

Long said the 2009 budget was approved with $9.2 million in expenditures and has now been cut down to $8.76 million.

Long added, the county was able to cut a total of $900,000 in expenditures between the 2009 and 2010 budgets.

"Cutting is one thing, living with it is another," Terry Sercer of Diehl, Banwart, Bolton Certified Public Accountants P.A. said.
