Girls' tennis defeats Monett

Thursday, September 3, 2009

The Nevada Lady Tigers varsity tennis team competed in their second match of the season Tuesday afternoon as they traveled to Monett.

After the 6-3 defeat they suffered in Joplin in the first meet of the season, the Lady Tigers entered the Monett match looking to crack the win column for the first time and that was exactly what happened as they defeated Monett 5-4.

The first two singles matches of the day went down to the wire as very evenly matched opponents squared off on the court. Monett's Emily Fulton came out on top of Leah Creasy in a very close No. 1 singles match by a final score of 8-8, 7-0.

Brittany Huebner got Monett off to a 2-0 start as she defeated Daven Smith in the No. 2 singles in an extra set as well by a final score of 8-8, 7-3. Katlyn Short quickly followed with Nevada's first singles victory of the day as she defeated Monett's Theresa Mangler 8-2.

The Lady Tigers continued to make quick work of Monett from that point on in the match as Caitlin Wagner and Ashley Magsam each earned singles wins by scores of 8-6 and 8-4, respectively.

The Lady Tigers took two of three doubles matches as well as Smith and Short defeated Mangler and Katelyn Sperandio 8-1 and Wagner/McKinley defeated the team of Desai Nrupa/Sophie Fulton 8-4.

On the JV side, Nevada enjoyed substantial success as well, taking three of four singles and both doubles matches. Regan Kimbrough, Lauren Phillips and Brandi Perrin all earned singles wins for Nevada by scores of 6-3, 6-0 and 6-1, respectively.

In doubles action, Kimbrough and Katie Brauer defeated Carrie Robbins and Kerry Tinklepaugh 6-2, while Phillips and Perrin shut out Mindy Kilgore and Alivia Gilliam 6-0.

With that win, the Lady Tigers improve to 1-1 in duals this season and are set to be in action again today as they head back to Joplin to take on Thomas Jefferson High School.
