Derrel Waynon Maness, 76, Nevada, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, at his home in Nevada following a lengthy illness. He was born Feb. 23, 1933, in Searcy, Ark., to Andrew Maness and Gertrude Humble Maness. He married Martha "Maggie" Hedges Nicholson on Jan. 23, 1985, in Barling, Ark.

Derrel was reared in Arkansas. For many years, he worked in mines in Leadville, Colo. He was an auto mechanic for many years. He was also a musician and had his own band. In later years, he was a painting contractor in Ft. Smith, Ark. Derrel had lived in Vernon County for the past 20 years. He received Christ as his Savior in 1984 and had attended church in Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Vernon County.

Survivors in addition to his wife Maggie of Nevada, include six children, Derrel W. "Casey" Maness, of the state of New Hampshire, Marsha Ediger, Michael Maness, Bill Maness, Laura Hart and Ricky Maness, all of the state of Colorado; three stepsons, David M. Nicholson, of the state of Oklahoma, Patrick Nicholson, of Germany, and Daniel Nicholson, of the state of Oklahoma; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren, numerous close nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and one stepgranddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Greg Maness; three sisters; and two brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 5, at the Fairview Community Church in Nevada with pastor Bert Travis officiating. Interment will follow in Milo Cemetery. Friends may call now and until noon on Thursday at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada.
