Leonard, Steward elected to Nevada City Council

Wednesday, November 4, 2009

Brian Leonard and Sherry Steward have emerged as the tentative winners of two open seats on the Nevada City Council. Leonard received 523 votes, winning one seat; and Sherry Steward appears to have won the other open council seat with a total of 413 votes. Joe Kraft was close behind with 411 votes and Amyl Bishop garnered 349 total votes. Voter turnout for this election was 13.56 percent of registered voters.

All results are unofficial until certified by the county clerk's office. With a margin of only two votes separating Steward and Kraft, a canvass of the votes could tip the scales in favor of one candidate or the other. A handful of votes also separated Steward and Kraft in the primary election.

In the 2006 race for Vernon County prosecutor, a close vote made declaring a winner a long process. In the first reports, it looked as though incumbent Lynn Ewing III might have been the winner by two votes; then it appeared challenger Jeff Feuquay might be the winner by one vote. In the end, a hand-recount was ordered and both candidates ended up with a few more votes; but Ewing emerged the winner by a three-vote margin.
