Court dates postponed while suspects search for attorneys

Andrew D. Wadel and William J. Barger, two of the men accused of taking part in the Nov. 9, 2009, home invasion in northern Vernon County that left a man wounded from a shotgun blast, were scheduled to appear in the Circuit Court of Vernon County on Thursday, Jan. 21, but it seems that problems obtaining legal representation prevented their appearance.

Butler, Mo., attorney Richard Koehler appeared in the court on behalf of Andrew D. Wadel, but Wadel was not transported to the courtroom from the Vernon County jail. Koehler informed the court of his intention to withdraw from the case before Wadel could appear. Wadel's next scheduled court appearance is Feb. 18.

William J. Barger was also scheduled to appear but no attorney has filed an intent to represent him with the court. His next scheduled court date is Feb. 4. And Douglas Stangeland, the third man charged in the case, has no attorney of record as yet according to the Vernon County prosecutor's office. Stangeland is also scheduled to appear before Associate Circuit Judge Neal Quitno on Feb. 4. All three men remain in the Vernon County jail without bond.

What? Nobody wants to represent these fine unstanding men???? Pretty ------ bad when a defense attorney is skiddish about taking on a case.

The attorneys don't want to take on a losing case knowing they probably won't get paid.

did any of you narrow minded ppl think that maybe the families cant afford the lawyer

Iam sure they just like most of you don't have that kind of money just laying around

so why don't you all show some compassion for these family they are not the ones who did this but they are also paying for it too

If they tell the court they can't afford an attorney, they will be given a public defender. They don't seem to have done that.

look at what these guys are charged with show compassion screw that what if it had been one of ur family members terrorized and i wouldnt want to defend them

That is true these families aren't rich people and my understanding is that William barger filed for a public defender and evidently they don't want to defend him either.people in this town are so smug I'd like to see any of you walk up to stangelands dad or wadels parents and tell them to their face that you hold them responsible, you won't because you are cowards hiding behind a computer and also cause you know your wrong

To be perfectly honest with you I really don't care how the parents or any of the relatives feel! I do have compassion for the victims. I'm sure if you wasn't related or somehow know these men and you was kidnapped, beaten, had most of your hand shot off or feared for your life you may not feel so sorry for these guys either!!!

innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. that is a fact. i know absolutely no one in this matter, but everyone is entitled to representation. don't potty on me and tell me it's raining. freedom of speech can sometimes be positive,valid, and even favorably regarded, but in the same breath can be inaccurate, incorrect,faulty, or not well aimed.

we have different opinions on issues (most of the time). a good example is in the comments on this post. but then, it is what makes us who we are. guilt or innocent's is decided in a court room. whether we like it or not. :)

I agree they new what they were doing and they knew it was wrong.and your probably right about them not being able to get attorneys but you know what if noone will defend them then they can't have a trial for them and this crap will just continue on and on with no end. The families of these men all feel horrible for their victims and none of the families had any idea anything was going on yet they have to walk around town with their heads down feeling guilty cause the people in this town always have something to say. Look at the earth quake in haite and all of the people who lost their lives and all anyone wants to talk about this crap. To me there is something very wrong with that I'm done talking about it I'm gonna help the families pick up the pieces and we are all moving on

OK THESE ARE QUOTES FROM THE NEWS PAPERS TELL ME THIS IF ANY ONE CAN IF THIS GUY WAS HIT WITH A STUN GUN OR TAZER LIKE WAS REPORTED THEN WHY DIDN'T THE REPORTS STATE THAT THERE WAS MARKS LEFT FROM IT CAUSE THEY DO LEAVE BURNS ON THE SKIN AN THEY WOULD NOT LEAVE IN SO SHORT OF TIME FROM THE KIDNAPPING TO WHEN THEY WAS CAUGHT. fact4u...apparently you have some law school background. Please, by all means, stand in the long line of public defenders/defense attorneys just waiting to defend these fine young men. Your pre-trial questions would make it very difficult for any prosecutor to rebuff.

If you need any character witnesses, please, let me know.

maybe no one wants to help these thugs cause they have been helped before-promised to be good boys and again & again in trouble-everyone is so tired of them getting off on charges before-i feel sorry for the people that the thugs have done things to-no one is perfect,but my mama taught me right from wrong!!!if my family is threaten by some one,i protect them-not go out & cause pain to other people!!

I do believe these men have the right under the constitution to be given a lawyer. We may not like it but the public defender's office can not refuse to represent them. When they do they better do the best job possible or it will be a point for appeal. We have to support the public defender because we never know when it may be us who needs their service. Something to think about from stupidville.

NDMCUST well they was tax payers till this happen whats the differents in feeding them or the taxpayers feeding the ones on food stamps an from what i see some of the ones that are on food stamps eats better than the tax payers that pay for those food stamps an a heck of alot better than what your served in jail to eat

Then why don't you take dougie some books? Got some info for you about your lease, just got off the phone with the lawyers in St. Louis, the lease you have(if you have one) is with the present owner and/or lein holder, If it sells the NEW OWNER DOESN'T have to honor it, if I buy it you all will be OUT PERIOD!!!! Hope you get the TAXES PAID!!!

Since I seem to be the one that started the subject on this article let me say--I commented on the accused not seeming to be able to easily get council. I SAID NOTHING about their families or the families financial state. BUT! I love my children and would die for them-I have done everything in my power to raise them right and to love God, themselves and respect authority-IF they ever stooped this low I can honestly say I would STILL love them but they would have to pay for their choices and yes, it would kill me a little at a time but the chips would fall where they may-BECAUSE of their choices and actions. "IF you cannot afford to obtain council, one will be provided for you".
