Snow, cold weather strikes the county

Tuesday, February 9, 2010

A snowstorm once again blew through the area and was expected to continue through this morning, but temperatures hovering above freezing throughout the day on Monday kept accumulation to a minimum, but falling temperatures made travel more treacherous in the area Monday night. A winter weather advisory remained in effect until early this morning.

As the storm continues across the state, the Missouri Department of Transportation reminds motorist to plan ahead, and to check road conditions before traveling. The latest road conditions are available at www.modot.org through MoDOT's Traveler Information Map. The map shows routes in different colors ranging from clear, to partially covered, covered or closed to travel. Travelers can also call MoDOT's toll-free number, 888-ASK-MODOT, to get road condition information.

"MoDOT crews will be out in full force battling this latest storm," said Jim Carney, MoDOT's state maintenance engineer. "Still, if your plans call for travel, please keep one eye on the weather and the other on your safety."

Light snowfall is still expected today, with little additional accumulation. As the snow comes to an end, colder air will settle into the area, with wind chills between 0 and 5 degrees this morning, bringing with it risks of cold-related health issues.

Here are some tips on staying warm, from the American Red Cross.

* Dress in several layers of lightweight clothing, which will keep you warmer than a single heavy coat.

* Mittens provide more warmth to your hands than gloves. Wear a hat, preferably one that covers your ears.

* Wear waterproof, insulated boots to keep your feet warm and dry and to maintain your footing in ice and snow.

* Take frequent breaks and stay hydrated.

* Seek medical attention immediately if you have symptoms of hypothermia including confusion, dizziness, exhaustion and severe shivering.

* Seek medical attention immediately if you have symptoms of frostbite including numbness, flushed gray, white, blue or yellow skin discoloration, numbness, or waxy feeling skin.
