Wasteful government spending

Thursday, February 25, 2010

Editor:

At Fort Benning, Ga,, there is a "school" that is a perfect example of wasteful government spending. Not widely known to the U.S. public, this "school" is called the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation. It was once simply called The School of the Americas.

The WHINSEC's job is to train soldiers from Latin American countries. First of all, it is not the U.S.A.'s responsibility to train soldiers from other countries. This is the responsibility of each individual nation.

Secondly, over the years, investigations by human rights and peace groups have shown that soldiers trained at WHINSEC went back to their own countries and tortured and killed people. One documented case is the murder of church workers in El Salvador by Salvadoran soldiers trained at WHINSEC. This kind of crime goes against the U.S. Constitution, the Bible, and basic moral and legal ethics.

Third, American dollars spent at WHINSEC could be spent on programs for the American people. It is time to take a closer look at the way we spend money on the military and the leeway we give them. Any member of Congress who supports WHINSEC should be voted out of office this year.

Sincerely,

David Shipp,
