NHS track competes at Paola

PAOLA, Kan. -- The Nevada Tigers and Lady Tigers track squads got back into action Friday as they went back out on the road for the Paola Relays.

As a team, the Tigers finished seventh of the 11 teams in attendance at the meet. Dalton Hendren, Todd Brier and Alex Bledsoe all posted top-five finishes on the day as Bledsoe took first in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4 minutes, 46.5 seconds and fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:08.4. Hendren took fifth in the 400-meter run as he finished in 54.5 seconds and ran the 200 in 24.3 seconds to take fifth. Brier finished the 1,600 in 4:56.2 to take fourth.

Kyle Bennett took sixth in the 400 with a time of 54.75 seconds while the Tigers' 4x400 and 4x100 relay teams each took seventh. The boys' 4x800 relay team took sixth.

On the girls' side, Melanie Messick, Jessica Neely and Mariah Mock each earned top-five individual finishes as the Lady Tigers took seventh as a team. Messick took fourth in the long jump at 15 feet, 2 inches while Neely finished the 100-meter hurdles in 17.2 seconds for second place. Mock finished second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.8 seconds, while taking sixth at 28.4 seconds in the 200.

Jessica Mosbrucker finished sixth in the discus at 89 feet even while Heather Thomas took sixth in the shot put with a distance of 33-11. Caitlin Johnson finished seventh in the 300-meter hurdles in 54.8 seconds while the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams took third and seventh, respectively.

The Tiger and Lady Tiger freshmen and sophomores are scheduled to hit the track at Joplin High School today for the Joplin freshman and sophomore meet. The next outing for the varsity squads will be Friday when they travel to Peculiar, Mo., for the Ray-Pec Invitational.
