Kansas Board of Regents receives tuition proposals

The Kansas Board of Regents received tuition proposals from the six state universities today. The proposals ranged from the University of Kansas request for an 8.2 percent to a low of 4.1 percent for Fort Hays State University.

If approved by the Regents in their June meeting, that means an undergraduate resident student at Pittsburg State University -- who proposed the second lowest increase at 5.6 percent -- will pay an additional $108 a semester beginning in the fall.

In documents prepared for the presentation, Pittsburg State administrators pointed to expected increases in a number of costs, including a 12.5 percent increase in employee health insurance premiums.

"The university has worked very hard to keep tuition increases to a minimum," PSU President Steve Scott said. "This does not replace any of the major cuts the university has made over the past year."

A tuition committee that included student, faculty, and alumni representatives developed the tuition plan over the past several months.

Scott noted that even with the proposed increases, tuition and fees at PSU would remain below that at nearly all of PSU's peers. In many cases, he said, significantly below.

"Traditionally, Pittsburg State has been a great value and a great investment," Scott said. "That's not going to change."

If approved, tuition at PSU next fall will be $1,934 for undergraduate resident students and $2,230 for graduate resident students. Out-of-state rates would be $6,304 for undergraduates and $6,013 for graduate students.
