In February 2009 St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lamar was destroyed by arson. Since that time the Parish family has been very active raising funds to cover the $400,000 needed to rebuild the church. The Rev. Justin Hoye and some members of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Nevada attended a fish fry hosted by the Lamar group during Lent. On June 6. Hoye presented Terry Riege, Lamar's Parish Council and Building Committee president with a check for $5,000 for the building fund. "This substantial gift means very much to us and we want to thank our neighboring St. Mary's for their most generous gift," parishoners said in a press release. St. Mary's-Lamar is a member of the Springfield-Cape Girardeau Diocese. St. Mary's-Nevada belongs to the Kansas City-St. Joseph Diocese.
