Cathey pleads not guilty in Gibbs murder case

Joseph Cathey, suspected of the May 6 killing of Dennis Gibbs, was arraigned in the 28th Circuit Court of Vernon County on Tuesday, Aug. 10. Cathey waived his right to a formal reading of the charges against him and and entered a plea of not guilty on one count of first degree murder and one count of armed criminal action. Judge James R. Bickel ordered Cathey to appear back in court for a pre-hearing conference on Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2010.

Cathey, 24, has been charged in connection with Gibbs' death. Gibbs' body was found behind his pickup at the intersection of Z Highway and Katy Track Road in rural Vernon County, near Richards. He had been stabbed and shot several times.

Cathey was arrested in Bourbon County, Kan., on Thursday, May 6, and then transferred to the Vernon County Jail where he is held without bond. Cathey is represented by public defenders, Joseph Zuzul and Kyla Moorhouse.
