Burning not allowed in city due to drought

A walk across grassy areas in Vernon County tells the tale with the crunching of the dry, brittle plant life.

Due to drought conditions now present, the Nevada Fire Department has announced that no burning will be allowed within the city limits of Nevada.

"We are also strongly discouraging any burning within the four-mile radius covered by our rural fire protection," said Nevada Fire Chief Robert Benn.

Although there's a possibility of rain in the forecast -- scattered showers are possible today, according to the National Weather Service -- Benn said it will take more than just a brief shower to reduce the fire risk enough to once again allow burning.

"We will not reinstate open burning until we receive a significant amount of precipitation. Please consider the damage that could be caused to your property as well as your neighbor's property before you start burning. If you want to burn leaves or brush, please call the fire department before you light the fire to see if the department has reinstated open burning," Benn said.
