Letter to the Editor

Give the NEVC kids a chance to expand their horizons

Thursday, September 9, 2010

Dear Editor:

It is pretty clear that the majority of NEVC supporters fear annexation into the Nevada School System for a variety of reasons.

One of the main reasons seems to be that their children "would not fit in." First of all, they should not sell their kids short. These kids know many of the "Nevada" kids through 4-H, summer sports programs, school contests and other activities. They are already friends with many of the Nevada area kids.

The Nevada School System draws students from rural areas, as well as from within the city. This gives the kids the advantage of becoming acquainted with more students and the opportunity to make new friends. They also learn that the world is a constantly changing place and by adapting to a larger environment, they can grow and mature. The sooner the kids see this advantage, the easier it will be for them to face new situations with confidence. The transition from high school to college or to the work force will be less stressful and more exciting if they are prepared.

By voting "YES" for annexation on Nov. 2, we have the opportunity to give our kids nice, well-maintained safe school buildings, the latest computer technology, advanced classes, college credit classes, after school programs, summer programs, and so much more. Classes in speech, debate, business, aerospace, art, music and Vo-ag, are only a few of the areas available to help the kids succeed.

The sports program in the Nevada School system offers at least seven different sports to choose from, which gives the boys and girls more opportunities to find the right sport and to excel.

NEVC kids have shown that they can compete in larger arenas and come out winners. Give them the chance to show us just how much more they can accomplish with all the advantages the Nevada School system can provide. Please don't discourage them with negative attitudes and emotions. All we have to do is vote "YES" on Nov. 2, and watch these kids make us proud.

Sincerely,

Barbara and Robert Cubbage
