Comets earn weekend sweep

Friday, October 15, 2010

The Cottey Comets volleyball team traveled to Springfield, Mo., on Friday, Oct. 8, and came home with a pair of much-needed wins. The Comets defeated Central Bible College, 25-18, 25-22, 25-16, and Barclay College, 25-12, 29-27, 25-13.

Game two in both matches was the tough one for the Comets as CBC and Barclay put up a fight in the middle of both matches. Head coach Marla Kannady Foreman told the team that any lost games would require additional running in practice, and that seemed to get the Comets over the hump.

Team leaders for the Comets against Central Bible were Ashley Helm with 11 kills, Kailey Kelly with 17 assists, Taylor Means with three aces, Emily Moore with 13 digs, and Amanda Taylor with five blocks. Against Barclay, it was Kelly with two aces and 22 assists, Brooke McKinley with nine kills and five blocks, and Moore with 15 digs.

The wins raised the Comets' record to 6-9 on the year. Next up is a road trip on Friday to Parsons, Kan., for a triangular meet against Labette Community College and Northern Oklahoma College. The next home match for Cottey will be on Friday, Oct. 22, when they face off against Baptist Bible College at 7 p.m., inside the friendly confines of Hinkhouse Gymnasium.
