City welcomes new police chief

Graham Burnley, Nevada's new police chief, visits with Vernon County Sheriff Ron Peckman, left, during a reception Friday to give Burnley an opportunity to meet the Nevada police officers, council members, area law enforcement personnel and community leaders. Burnley, who has been with the Chesterfield Police Department since 1989, and a police officer since 1974, will start work in Nevada on Jan. 1.

It's a shame that Nevada always goes out of town to fill positions. They haven't done well doing that in recent years.

I didn't read his salary, must have missed it in the article or maybe like so many other things people are assuming and you know what they say about assuming.

I for one, am happy we got what sounds like a good qualified person to head up the city police department. We need someone who can step in and clean up the city's reputation of being the crack center in SW Missouri as well as protecting the citizens and supervising officers. Let's wait and see what he does to improve our department and the additional training he provides to our officers. Only then, can we have a clear insight into his ability to run a small police department.

Most police chiefa need to know more about getting grants and the business end rather than law enforcement. Most towns have an assistant chief who handles the L.E end.

I am very happy to see someone with his qualifications come to Nevada. This town needs a New Chief to clean this place up.. I see more police officers just sitting around in there cars then actually doing something about all the crime that happens here. If more citizens would actually do more to help this town wouldn't be such a mess. But it seems most residence like to talk more, than take action..He's a good man and should be given a chance with everyones support...

You guys in Nevada have no idea how lucky you are to have gotten this man as Chief. You may have had bad experiences in the past hiring from the outside, but if you give your new Chief a chance things will change. He is the kind of man your Officers will want to work for. I know, I have followed Chief Burnley through two branchs of the Military and for close to 25 years. I have also observed what he has done for the Chesterfield Police Department. If the man is given an honest chance by the City Fathers and his new Department, he will make a good Department even better.

I've known Chief Burnley as a cop for years. He will represent Nevada PD in the same fashion as he has represented Chesterfield PD, with dedication and professionalism. With no intended insult towards the current Nevada force, it is always wise practice to bring in an 'outsider' if your department needs fixing. An outsider has no axes to grind and no favors to fill.

we need someone who will get rid of the "bad" officers in this town who seem to get by with whatever they want to. instead of getting rid of the bad officers they get rid of the ones who actually try to help this town. pretty sad "someone" cant get rid of the right people. this town needs alot of help and hopefully the new chief can do it. good luck

I'm interested in knowing how two people found this webpage to tell us how great the new guy is. Him being from east missouri tells me they are also. Now i'd bet 2 months ago they couldn't tell you where nevada is on a map. Now they have found this site and commented. Just seems interesting to me. No fault of the new guy. He seems like a decent man to me.

Just curious howitzer but how do you know what our city needs. You get on these blogs and offer all sorts of negative opinions and solutions (still negative) but what actual knowledge do you have. How do you know Chief Burnley is going to bring more politics to the job and if he does how do you know that's not the fix that is needed. Just curious. . .

ccmom, i'm just wondering why you use every chance you get to attack howitzer? I have looked over your comments and have noticed that you tend to attack instead of actually having some to say that advances the topic. Just curious.
