August "Gus" Kovacic

August "Gus" Kovacic, age 89, a resident of Fort Scott, Kan., died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2010, at the Prairie Mission Retirement Village in St. Paul, Kan. He was born Aug. 23, 1921, in Girard, Kan., the son of John and Katie Kovacic. Gus graduated from the Arma High School and attended Pittsburg State University. He served with the United States Army during World War II. Gus married Evelyn Bailey on Feb. 28, 1947, in Wichita, Kan. Gus had worked for Bruce Marble and Granite Works in Fort Scott for more than 50 years. He was a member of the Olson Frary Burkhart Post No. 1165 Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. Gus enjoyed outdoor activities of all kinds especially fishing and duck hunting.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn; a son, Ernie Kovacic and wife, Janet, Stark, Kan.; two grandsons, Jeff Kovacic and wife, Jenni, and Jason Kovacic and wife, Paula, all of Stark, Kan.; and two great-grandsons, Hunter and Ruger Kovacic. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Tammy Sue Kovacic.

The Rev. Phil Wilson will conduct funeral services at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 4, at the Cheney Witt Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Memory Gardens Cemetery where military honors will be provided by the Olson Frary Burkhart Post No. 1165 Veterans of Foreign Wars. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Monday, at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the First Church of God c/o the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main, P.O. Box 347, Ft.
