Myrtle Lorine Mayes, 90, Springfield, Mo., formerly of Nevada, Mo., died Friday, Dec. 31, 2010, at Cox South Medical Center in Springfield, Mo. She was born Oct. 6, 1920, in Nevada, Mo., to Lewis Earl Mowry and Iva Pearl Tylar Mowry. She was married June 27, 1953, in Camdenton, Mo., to Richard "Dick" Mayes and he preceded her in death Oct. 21, 1966.

Mrs. Mayes grew up in Nevada and graduated from Nevada High School in 1938. She worked for Baxter Laboratories in Hayes, Kan., for 17 years, retiring in 1986. She lived in Ellis, Kan., from 1955 until 2006, when she moved to Battlefield, Mo., to reside with her daughter and son. Mrs. Mayes was a member of the United Methodist Church in Ellis, Kan., past president of the United Methodist Women, Meal Site, the local AARP in Ellis, Kan., and the Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors include nine children, Betty Wallace, El Cajon, Calif., Shirley Wagner, Battlefield, Mo., Kathy Williams, Brush, Colo., Linda Mayes, Hayes, Kan., Rick Mayes, Battlefield, Mo., Kenneth Mayes, Pace, Fla., Debra Horner, Fountain Valley, Calif., Diane Magers, Lebanon, Mo., and Earl Mayes, Port Orchard, Wash.; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Mabel Urner, Nevada, Mo., and Maudie Ramey, Springfield, Mo.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; spouse; one daughter, Carol Westhusin; two brothers, Stan Mowry and Earl Mowry; and one sister, Frances Zwiebel.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 4, at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada with the Rev. Ralph Clark officiating. Interment will follow at Newton Burial Park in Nevada.

Friends may call now and until the hour of service at Ferry Funeral Home 301 S. Washington, Nevada, and the family will receive friends at the funeral home, Tuesday, between 10 and 11 a.m., prior to the funeral service.
