Attic fire damages home

Wednesday, January 5, 2011

A small attic fire caused an estimated $1,000 in damage to a home owned by Don Hutchison, in the 1300 block of West Lee Street, Nevada, on Jan. 2.

Firefighters responded to a report of light smoke in the attic at 12:52 p.m. -- so light, in fact, that it took firefighters some time to find the source of the smoke. No source was found inside the home, or in any of the accessible attic spaces. Firefighters determined the fireplace flue was working properly, a closer inspection of the attic area was conducted and a "hot spot" was discovered when the wall and ceiling met in a newer addition to the residence, according to information provided by Nevada Fire Chief Bob Benn. Inside the ceiling, a wire had short-circuited and insulation was smoldering, so firefighters removed the insulation, addressing the situation.
