MLK Day events added to schedule

Friday, January 14, 2011

Cottey College faculty, staff, and students have added events to this weekend's celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

The Opening Ceremony, at 10 a.m., Saturday, will now feature speaker Dr. Teresa Clounch, associate dean of students/director of residence life at Baker University. Her remarks are titled, "I have a Dream ... I am the Dream."

The Cottey College Singers will perform; student Callie Clow will read quotes from Dr. King; and Cottey director of spiritual life Rev. Erica Sigauke will lead a closing prayer. Following the ceremony, students will participate in various service projects around the community.

A chapel service will be held on Monday evening, at 7 o'clock, in the Cottey College Chapel. It will be led by the Rev. Sigauke and members of the Cottey Spiritual Life Committee. Following the service, the Cottey Drum Circle will perform. The event is open to the public and attendees may bring their own drums and participate in the drum circle. The Chapel Service also will serve as a collection point for a school supply drive for area schoolchildren. Those unable to attend the Chapel Service may drop off school supply donations at the Office of Student Life.
