KCP&L offers tips on dealing with power outages at home

Friday, April 22, 2011

Spring storm season is upon us, with stormy weather in the forecast through Wednesday; and with spring storms often come power outages.

Kansas City Power and Light offered the following tips to help customers stay safe and be prepared in the event of a power outage.

* Compile a list of emergency phone numbers; include 1-888-LIGHTKC (1-888-544-4852) for reporting an outage to KCP&L. Customers are always encouraged to call and report their outages. Phone calls are the best way for KCP&L to know they are without power and allow the company to better determine the full extent of damage in their neighborhood.

* Assemble a storm kit that contains a battery-powered radio or TV, flashlights, blankets and other essential items. Keep it centrally located, and ensure all family members know where to find it.

* If the power goes out at your home, disconnect or shut off appliances that will automatically come on when the power is restored. If all appliances come on at once, it may overload the circuits.

* Stay clear of any power lines that may have come down as a result of a severe storm. Lines that are on the ground may be energized and deadly. Contact KCP&L immediately to report a power outage or downed power lines.
