Violence up and down the border between Kansas and Missouri was common leading up to and during the Civil War. The people and landscape of the area were forever changed by blood and death and fire. But those life changing experiences remained in the memories of those who lived them and were often, at a later date, set in stone to remind those in the present of who the participants were and what happened.
