Heavy rains briefly soak Nevada, parts of Vernon County

Tuesday, July 26, 2011

Monday afternoon's heavy downpour was likely a welcome sight to area producers. The storm, which formed over southwestern Vernon County, spread over the city of Nevada and parts of the county in a short amount of time. At 3:13 p.m., the National Weather Service had issued a severe thunderstorm warning, and rain was so heavy that a flash flood warning was issued. The NWS warned that the storm could produce up to 3 inches of rainfall "in a short time," and said, "This warning especially applies to the city of Nevada. Thunderstorms with extremely heavy rainfall have impacted Nevada. These storms were nearly stationary, causing storms to impact the city for a longer duration."

Meanwhile, there were unconfirmed reports of tree branches in the roadway in the Nevada area, and a tractor-trailer jackknifed on southbound U.S. 71. No injuries were reported from that crash.

The short-lived storm did cool temperatures for the rest of the afternoon, and a possibility of more storms continued overnight and into today. Nevertheless, forecasts still call for high temperatures of near or above 100 degrees for the next few days, and an excessive heat warning remains in effect through 7 p.m., Thursday.

Wednesday, the temperature is expected to top 100 degrees, with heat index values as high as 109.
