Missouri sales tax holiday begins today

Friday, August 5, 2011

Missouri's Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday begins today and continues through Sunday.

People who make qualifying purchases in Missouri will not have to pay the state's sales taxes on those items during that time. Although other public entities that collect sales tax may opt out, Vernon County and the city of Nevada are participating in this year's sales tax holiday.

In general, things that qualify for the tax holiday are clothing items that are less that $100, including shoes, school supplies totaling $50 or less, and computers and computer accessories less than $3,500 each; except software, which can be no more than $350.

The Missouri Department of Revenue says clothing can include such things as coats or fabric needed to make school uniforms; but doesn't include accessories like jewelry, watches, purses, umbrellas and so forth.

School supplies means things like textbooks, notebooks, paper, writing instruments, crayons, art supplies, rulers, book bags, backpacks, handheld calculators, chalk, maps, and globes;" but it doesn't include "watches, radios, CD players, headphones, sporting equipment, portable or desktop telephones, copiers or other office equipment, furniture, or fixtures."
