PITTSBURG, Kan. -- Nevada defeated border rival Fort Scott in the third place match of the Pittsburg Invitational Volleyball Tournament on Saturday.

The Tigers went 3-2 on the day for Coach Ashley Thoreson.

"I was very proud of the way our team played," Thoreson said. "We had a lot of close sets and they did a great job of finishing plays and not playing timid when it was a tight game. We were very aggressive at the net and scrappy in the back row. I'm very happy with the outcome of the tournament because even the matches we lost were only by a few points."

In the team's first match of the day, Labette County pulled out a close win in the third set to get past Nevada 25-13, 18-25, 25-23. The Tigers rebounded with a close win over Fort Scott, winning in three sets 23-25, 25-23, 25-20.

Nevada then got past Iola 25-20, 25-20 in the final match of pool play.

In one semifinal, Paola defeated Nevada 25-23, 25-23.

In the third place match, Nevada once again met Fort Scott. And the results were the same again, as Nevada won 19-25, 25-23 and 25-23.

For the tourney, Regan Kannady had 44 kills, Bailey Harbit had 30 and Sharla Quick added 16. Cassidy Lowery handed out 82 assists for the day.

Rilie Good had 11 blocks, while Harbit had 10 and Kannady added nine.

Defensively, Marisa Hughes had 66 digs, Morgan McNeley had 44 and Lowery had 24. Madison Harms also had 24 digs. Lowery had eight aces and Hughes served six aces.

Paola won the tourney by going 5-0. The Panthers defeated host Pittsburg 25-8, 25-19 in the title match. The Tigers are now 4-6 on the season.

NHS gym will host matches this week

According to Athletic Direction Kevin McKinley, the NHS gymnasium will likely be functional for this week's home volleyball matches.

"The North bleachers are now operational and we're working to resolve the mechanical issues with the remaining bleachers," McKinley said on Monday.

The team is home tonight vs. Carl Junction, with the freshman match beginning at 5 p.m. The team is also home on Thursday vs. Stockton, with the JV match starting the night at 6 p.m. McKinley thanked Osage Prairie YMCA and Nevada Middle School for providing a back-up plan.
