Fenske photo exhibit on display through Oct. 15

Tuesday, October 4, 2011

Cottey professor emeritus of theatre, Alfred Fenske, has an exhibit of his photography on display in the P.E.O. Foundation Art Gallery through Oct. 15.

Titled "Pretty Pictures," the images feature a variety of notable sites around the world from the Eiffel Tower in Paris, to the Heidelberg Castle in Germany, to the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Having grown up in Germany, Fenske visits Europe when he can, and has included scenes from these visits.

Many of the images will be familiar to viewers; but some offer Fenske's unique perspective, as in a profile of George Washington's face carved on the side of Mt. Rushmore, S.D.

There are four views, for example, from the top of the Washington Monument that offer a unique perspective when viewed together.

In the artist's statement, Fenske noted, "Ever since I obtained my first camera, a simple box with a lens, as a teenager, beautiful things as I perceive them have inspired me to take pictures .... It should be apparent to the viewer that I am drawn to capturing images that are inherently aesthetically pleasing in composition and presentation and I choose not to apologize for that. Hence the title of this exhibition: Pretty Pictures."

Fenske has exhibited his work in other galleries and shows throughout the area; and all of the works in the exhibit are for sale, but viewing is free and open to the public during gallery hours.

The gallery is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday and later on the nights of performances.

The gallery is located inside the Haidee and Allen Wild Center for the Arts on the northeast corner of Austin and Tower streets in Nevada.
