ST. LOUIS -- The 2011 volleyball season ended for the Cottey Comets on Friday at the NJCAA D-II Region XVI tournament.
Host Florissant Valley defeated Cottey 16-25, 25-23, 15-25, 25-17, 15-12 in a back-and-forth five set match.
"Some questionable calls from the refs left my players feeling like they were fighting all the time to keep up," Cottey Coach Marla Kannady Foreman said. "It's like playing 6 on 8, only the ones in the black and white shirts have more say about what the tempo of the match will be like. Opposing fans were saying after the match that they felt it was a little lop-sided to their favor."
No stats were available from the match.
Cottey ends the season with a record of 5-22.
"We are looking forward to the small break, so that the student/athletes can regroup and build on their academic progress," Foreman said.
Added Foreman: "I have two try-outs coming up soon on November 16 and December 7 where I feel I can focus on recruiting some key players to help with the students I will have returning next fall."
Two members of the Comets were recognized on the all-region team. Freshman setter Alexis Self was a first team all-region selection, while sophomore outside hitter Samantha Pierce was a second team selection.
Pierce is the team's only sophomore this year.
In other first round regional action, Northeastern Oklahoma A&M topped Wentworth 25-12, 25-18, 25-18.
Top-seeded East Central knocked off Florissant Valley in the semifinals 25-10, 25-17, 25-13.
Number-two seed Longview defeated NEO in the other semifinal.
Longview then defeated East Central in the region title match, 25-21, 15-25, 25-13, 10-25, 15-10.
Longview advances to the national tourney in Ohio with the victory.
