CARTHAGE -- Like he's done all season long, Joseph Ferry led the way for the Nevada High School golf team. A senior, Ferry was the runner-up at Monday's Sonic/Carthage Invitational golf tournament. Ferry shot a 73 and finished two strokes behind individual champion Blake Augustine of Neosho.

"We thought Joe had it," Nevada Coach Brian Leonard said. "But the kid from Neosho was still on the course. It's okay. I told Joe he'll just have to win next Wednesday at districts."

Ferry was two over after three holes, but fought back and played an even par round. After nine holes, Ferry had a 35, even par. Leonard said Ferry finished strong. He had a bogey, par and birdie late to finish with a 73.

"Joseph has been hitting the ball extremely well," Leonard said. "And he's scoring well. Sometimes you can hit the ball well, but not score well. Right now, Joseph is doing both."

Andrew Quitno finished with an 83, good for 16th place. Keegan Bell shot an 88 and finished 24th. Also for Nevada, Lucas Denman tied for 46th with a 103 and Taylor Handly was 51st with a 107.

Nixa won the team title. Ozark and Nevada tied for fourth place.

The Tigers will host a home invite with Butler on Thursday at 4 p.m.
