Cancer Survivor dinner slated for June 4

Tuesday, May 22, 2012

The Vernon County Relay For Life Committee's 13th annual Cancer Survivor dinner will be held June 4 at the Nevada Eagles Lodge for cancer survivors and their guest.

"This dinner is our way of honoring all who have struggled with cancer by providing an evening of enjoyment just for them," stated Linda Chesnut, Survivor Chairperson. "The dinner was started in 1999 by Becky Butterfield and each year we have to add names to our invitation list as cancer just doesn't quit," Chesnut continued.

The committee knows there are other cancer survivors in Vernon County who are not on the list. "Word of mouth is the only way we can get names, due to the HIPPA laws," Chesnut explained and added, "If anyone has had cancer and has not received an invitation, please contact me at 448-1144 for information. For those who did receive your invitation, would you please RSVP as soon as possible to aid us in our planning."

The Relay For Life walk, the committee's highlight event of the year, will be held on Friday, June 22, on the Nevada Square and courthouse lawn.

"We wish we could get the public to understand that everyone is welcome to attend. Marci Mitchell will headline the free entertainment as well as others throughout the night. Good food, games, and special walks are other event," stated Julie Kemper, committee chairperson. "Cancer touches every community, every day -- we are not exempt. The dinner held June 4th is to celebrate and honor the survivors. The walk, set for June 22, starting at 6 p.m., is a way for everyone to help fight back by attending and participating!" Kemper concluded.
